A Baguette under the arm. All about the iconic Fendi bag
Next year the Baguette Fendi turns a quarter of a century . It was 1997 when Silvia Venturini Fendi , creative director of accessories alongside Karl Lagerfeld, displaced the fashion world now addicted to the minimal and very clean style that prevailed in those years and launched her it bag. Small in size, it is called Baguette, because just like the French loaf it is carried under the arm . Of elongated shape, it measures 27X15 cm. It is also equipped with an adjustable shoulder strap, but the unwritten rule requires it to be carried as short as possible.

All versions of the Fendi Baguette

But what is so special about this long and rectangular Baguette bag? Simple. It is versatile. At the highest levels. By its nature, it rejects simple and essential versions, preferring to always be over the top. His materials of choice are: fur, crocodile, lizard, denim, velvet and pony. The decorations are never lacking, beads and sequins, pearls, fringes and crystals. In addition to the fabrics and materials, Fendi also enjoyed playing with proportions. The Baguettes Micro and Nano reduce the already modest measures of the it bag. In 2020 the Pico Baguette arrives , no longer to be worn on the arm, but around the neck, as if it were a pendant. In fact, it has a long chain and is decorated with beads, just like a bijou.

His biggest fans? Celebrities

Over the years it has been declined in countless versions (more than 1000), which have also ended up in a book. Published by Rizzoli and edited by Silvia Venturini Fendi herself, the Fendi Baguette monograph becomes the illustrated story of a myth. The stars compete for it. From Madonna to Naomi Campbell, passing through Gwyneth Paltrow and Julia Roberts, up to the very popular Nicky Minaj and Rihanna.

The consecration with Sex and The City

"It's not a bag, it's a baguette!" The highlight of the history of the baguette, the one that determines its consecration, is having entered an episode of the very famous TV series Sex and The City. So yells Carrie Bradshaw to a thief who orders her to give him the bag.

Also in the brand new remake of Sex and The City, not yet out, Sarah Jessica Parker wears a Baguette bag totally covered in purple sequins.

The vintage market

Just googling Fendi Baguette Vintage to get an idea of the extent of the market for past models. Most wanted? Obviously the models no longer produced today. For example, the one made for the tenth anniversary: in white canvas, to be decorated to your liking thanks to the set of Pantone markers sold together.

The Hand in Hand project

This year the Hand in Hand project: which involves ateliers and laboratories from different Italian regions that reinterpret the bag according to the traditions of the place where they are located. Each Baguette is produced in only 20 pieces. There is the classic Fendi Baguette, made in Tuscany by an artisan, made of vegetable leather, without seams. That of Emilia Romagna, inspired by the mosaics of Ravenna, with eight-pointed stars like those that decorate the vaults of Galla Placidia. In Liguria it is inspired by the filigree technique. The most precious is the Sicilian one, in gold with corals from Trapani.
